The Caveman is a self sufficient, non-stop expedition race, approx. 490 km long starting on Sunday 21st April 2012 and ending on 28th April 2012.

Entries are limited to 75 (seventy five) riders for the 2012 edition.

The start is from Mossel Bay Point Cave.

Participants are grouped into batches of 15 (fifteen) riders.

Race briefings take place at 18h30 the evening prior to departure.

The end/finish is at the Point, Mossel Bay (Venue to be confirmed).

Winners and podium finishers are adjudged entirely on who reaches Mossel Bay the fastest in the least amount of total time, and then subsequently.

The maximum time allowed to complete the race is 90 hours after which riders have to leave the course or complete it without qualifying as Cavemen (women).

Aspiring Cavemen travel with a clip card which has to be marked at the checkpoints along the route. Caves, overnight stops etc.

No seconding or outside help is allowed. Riders have to depend on themselves and their equipment to complete the course.

Riders have to carry all their own race gear with them – food for the day’s stage, water, cycling apparel, spares, tools, first aid, lights, cellp hone, maps, route-descriptions etc. etc. See basic kit list.

There are three support stations (overnight stops). At these, Riders can expect good hot food, a bed or mattress with bedding, towels, showers, be able to clean equipment, have breakfast, receive lunch packs, stock up on energy drinks and bars etc.

There are also various other refreshment stations along the route. At these you would be able to refill water, have light meals, drinks and sponsored goods. These steps are described in the route narratives.

If you envisage racing hard you would have to strategise and plan to spend as little time possible at the stops en-route

It is recommended that Riders form partnerships to their competitiveness – safety in numbers, advantages to be found in working together.

There is no rule preventing individuals from heading off on their own. If you decide to ride on past an overnight stop, you face the real possibility of riding at night to reach to next overnight stop.

The Caveman is navigation orientated event. Participants are expected to navigate using route maps and route descriptions which can be downloaded and adapted to your purpose.

The route is minimally marked. Where direction is deemed confusing you could encounter a Caveman Club pointing you in the right direction.

Support vehicles are for the use of the race organization and in case of emergency.

In the case of injury, withdrawal or irrevocable breakdown, Riders will be assisted, or taken to the nearest support station or town.

There is an official race doctor for major medical assistance, and back-up medical assistance can be called on from the nearest towns.

Riders are expected to carry their own first aid kit with them in order to attend to their own minor ailments.

Any equipment needed by a participant is for their own account.

Should you wish to withdraw, after having been taken to the nearest support station or town, it would be for your own account. Caveman Events | Test your mettle, Ignite your fire will be as helpful as possible as circumstances allow.

The organizers only undertake to provide for the entrants under the scope of the Caveman Expedition race organization.

WINNERS ALL WHO DARE!

To complete the Caveman with the 96 hour cut-off time will bed a magnificent, majestic achievement. You will be honoured with your own special caveman club and granted automatic admission to the Caveman Club.
